I was urged to read this book by a good friend of mine and was asked for my opinion. Upon first reading, I felt almost angry that someone who knew me would suggest this as reading material for ME. The "Good Ole' Boy" language and attitude toward black people had me disgusted, and I almost put it down. But, I rarely, if ever, am able to do just that. I wanted to understand the drive for the author to be so blunt and non-politically correct in a world where image is everything, and not hurting the feelings of others comes before good sense, so I continued to read. I am glad I decided to finish, for what I read was a very stark and thought provoking story of a young child moulded by his surroundings and his herritage to become another statistic of hate and racisim. I truly believe the author wrote this book to open everyone's eyes as to what the 'Civil War' was truly about and, in hope, to show everyone that things could be different....if only WE would allow them to be.
