New Beginnings eBook Flynn E O'Brien
From My Goodreads Review Number 141:This review is on New Beginnings by Flynn E. O’Brien. This is the first book I have read by this young Writers of SciFi author. Flynn wrote this book between 12 and 14 years old. She is only fifteen years old now, I believe, but she spins a very good SciFi tale.
This novel is very much written for the younger, teenage reader, but I found no trouble following the storyline and enjoying the story told in first person by the main character, Georgina Swindler who is a fifteen year old girl. Georgina, or G as she likes to be called, lives in Trixton, South Australia with her mother, father, younger sister, Gracie, and twin brother, Austin.
Georgina’s life seems ordinary until a new disease called Plactocidus appears in Western Europe and begins to spread worldwide. The people in Australia don’t think Plactocidus will ever reach their home towns, but it does. Quarantine doesn’t work and soon people start going to sleep and not waking up again.
Georgina and Austin wake up one morning and the rest of their family does not. This starts the adventure to find a new place to live and find other people like themselves who seem to be immune to the disease. The disease mostly affects older people. Younger kids like Georgina survive, but they are now on their own until a strange organization called SPDTA finds them and needs their help to stop the disease. SPDTA is not what it appears to be. Georgina and her friends are caught up in a deception that threatens all their lives.
SPDTA plans to use time travel to send sixteen year old kids back in time to try and stop the disease from starting. The method of time travel using young kids is unique and well thought out by the young author. The dangers are very real and success is uncertain.
I give this book Four Stars because the story is original, entertaining, interesting and easy to read. The characters are likeable and you soon find yourself feeling their emotions. The story moves quickly and the plot is well constructed. There is a shortage of dialog in some places as the main character explains what is going on, but I found myself too engrossed in the story to be bothered by it. The young author has an easy flowing writing style that keeps you moving forward to find out what is going to happen next. I liked this story a lot. The author will improve the writing with practice and experience. The ending of this story sets you up for the next book. I look forward to the sequel called Different Time due out soon.
Keep reading good science fiction and let me know when you find an interesting novel or author.

New Beginnings eBook Flynn E O'Brien Reviews
Full Disclosure Flynn E. O'Brien is a thinker if I had to put a label on her. Flynn is very much in-tuned with mortality, in New Beginnings I get the feeling that Flynn knows we need time travel to elude death. “Time is a killer.” “Everyone knows that. Time will bury us.” Flynn is a prolific writer who surely has much more to unpack about the connections between time travel and our fears of mortality. New Beginnings unpacks the various, not-quite-right metaphors we use to describe the direction of time (arrows, rivers, mazes). I can tell Flynn has a growing obsession with time travel and how it shaped the ways she tells stories. As a general cultural survey, “New Beginnings" illustrates a powerful longing for escapism — from death, from our humdrum fates. So long as we perceive time the way we do, literary dreams and scientific studies of time travel are here to stay.
Good book. Interesting story, cool concept and characters you could root for. What prevented me from giving it 5 stars was the pace. Overall it was good, but there were a couple of places where it was a bit uneven.
I enjoyed reading this book and it was a good pastime though the overall tone was a bit young for me. Still, it was a fun read, and I'd recommend it to those who like young adult books.
This is an excellent book for such a young lady to have written. She was only fourteen when she had this book published.
It's fast paced, exciting, and I couldn't put it down. It's believable, even if it's about a subject which has been tackled many times before, and will be written about many times in the future. This is because we are frightened of our own demise which is only natural.
It's also written in a way which endears you to the main characters. Flynn doesn't attempt to write long, complex sentences, which is a mistake, she writes as she presumably thinks. I find this much easier to read. It flows.
I shall follow this young lady's writing career with much interest as she grows older, and her writing matures, and gets better and better.
At the moment though, to have written such a good book as well as get it published at the tender age of fourteen, makes this a huge endeavor. It's a triumph. I greatly look forward to her next book...
