Weir of Hermiston Robert Louis Stevenson Books

I would have given this selection 5 stars except that my husband and I didn't realize when we began reading it that it was and UNfinished work of RLS. When we got to the last paragraph, we had a big question mark over our heads and wondered if we had somehow gotten a defective copy that was missing a few chapters. We had to Google it to find that it did, indeed, need more chapters to carry on the plot -- they were just never written. If you like a book where you can speculate on what happens at the end, this is certainly the book to do it with; the characters are wonderful and the story stops at a point where you really, really want it to go on.

Weir of Hermiston Robert Louis Stevenson Books Reviews

Where can this be evidenced?
"The Town got its name from the unfinished works of Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Weir of Hermiston"... I would suppose that that "ficticious book" was set in "Hermiston Village" or perhaps the "Hermiston Farm" area". This seems to be widely accepted in that area, but no evidence can be shown.
This was Stevenson's last novel and is unfinished, though it is known how it was going to finish. The main feature of the plot is the relationship between Lord Hermiston, a judge renowned for his stringency, and his more liberal (but still fairly well-behaved) son. The plot is of course a lot more complex than that, and the father is absent for most of even what Stevenson wrote before his death.
It is a very Scottish novel, with large portions of it taking place in the Scottish countryside, with clan relations, etc. and with most of the dialogue in Scots.
Some of the characterisation is excellent, and if it had been finished with Stevenson's usual ability along the suggested storyline, it would have been a very moving novel indeed.
I was surprisingly disappointed with this novel, partly because so much is left in the air. The relationship between Archie and his father (a finely disguised mix of RLS' father and Lord Braxfield- whose portrait actually appears on the cover), is perhaps one of the most interesting features. Christina or Kirstie (the younger one) appears part way through and although she is obviously going to be a major character in the novel disappears (because the MS cuts off) at just the least appropriate time. I suggest with the notes that you read a chapter and then read the notes for the next one, otherwise it can be a wee bittie piecemeal reading the thing. Don't be put off by the Lowland Scots dialogue if you aren't Scottish, Miller has listed the more important words at the back and most appear several times. What is there is well written (although pretty wordy by today's standards), but it's not good to be left in the lurch like that.
This is Stevenson's masterpiece, and yet it is neglected by Americans. There are four main reasons. First, Stevenson died when he was only about a hundred pages into the text, so it's unfinished and nobody likes to read an unfinished novel. Secondly, the dialogue is in Scottish dialect with the words spelled phonetically to give the pronunciation, plus a bunch of words unknown to Americans. There is a glossary at the back, but nobody likes having to flip back and forth. Thirdly, this is not for kids and it's not a horror story, so it doesn't attract the fans of Treasure Island or Jekyll and Hyde. It cannot be made into a movie because of its truncated state, so it won't attract movie-goers. The Penguin edition has a fine introduction by Karl Miller.
RL Stevenson died before he finished what many consider to be his masterpiece, a love and moral story at once. This free version conjectures, based on his notes, how the book might have ended, but at the same time poses interesting legal questions. A must for any Stevenson reader
Stevenson is a wonderful writer. I enjoyed reading it while traveling around Scotland where it is set. It is sad that he died before completing the book, but the kindle edition includes helpful notes about the plans he had for the conclusion of the novel.
