Awaken to a grim world once hidden before your eyes.

There must be something wrong with 13-year-old, Ian Grim. Why else would Mitchel Trent, who everyone believes to be the nicest guy in school, bully him? Why did everyone at school give him nasty looks and whisper about him in spiteful gossip? Even teachers didn’t like him. They always made him sit in the far corner of their classrooms where it was easy to ignore him. Even more hurtful, was the fact that Ian’s own father blatantly ignored him. If it wasn’t for his loving mother; his fun, yet psycho, younger brother; and his own sparkling sarcastic personality; Ian might think his life was a bit difficult. That is, until his mother goes missing one night.

In a twist of cruel irony, his father finally pays Ian’s some attention only to threaten his life and force him on the run. Desperate for answers, Ian is compelled to accept help from Mitchel, the “nice” bully from school. That’s when Ian learns that his mother was taken by the Reaper.

If Ian wishes to save his mother, he must first survive his father. And in order to do that, he will need to learn of the spirit world, discover his own power, and embrace his role in an ongoing shadow war, before the Reaper tears his world apart.

This is the author's debut novel, and is her first novel in what promises to be a thrilling series. Here is my take on some of the elements from the book:

Characters - There is a small enough cast that I had no trouble remembering who is who, which I appreciate (some books have so many characters you can't keep them all straight). The characters have depth, and as you get to know them better, you come to understand them better. They develop as individuals, too, and are not locked into a static state as happens in some books by new authors.

Setting - There is enough of the setting given to provide backdrop to the story, but not so much given that it overshadows what is happening to the characters. A nice balance, in my opinion.

System - I don't know how else to title this section, but by system I mean the system of abilities that the characters can use. The system in this book is intriguing, and from what you learn of it in this book, seems well thought out. We learn about the system at the same rate the protagonist does, so there is much more to learn about in the coming books, and I'm very excited to learn more. I'm the type of reader who wants the system to be organized and have rules that it abides by, such as those you find in novels by Brandon Sanderson, and this does not disappoint at all (with what I know so far)! I really am excited to keep reading, as more books come out!

Audience - I would recommend this book to a teen+ audience. I'm an adult, and found it very enjoyable, but wouldn't classify this as an adult novel, just because it doesn't have mature content. I'd probably shelve it in the Young Adult section at the library (which happens to be one of my favorite places to find new material to read). I'd still recommend it to younger teenagers and tweens as well, though. :)

Conclusion - Many of the first books I've read by new authors, which begin a series, leave you with a big cliff hanger at the end, in an attempt to guarantee a purchase of the second novel. They are also short, and don't really complete a story on their own. They feel more like a pilot episode of a new TV series than a full length, stand alone book. All of that said, I'm happy to say that that is NOT the case with this book! The Forest of Hollow is an engaging story in its own right, and while it does leave you excited to continue on the journey, does not do so in the bait and switch manner of some of the other newer authors I have read. I would certainly recommend that you pick this book up!

A Grim Awakening The Forest of Hollow edition by Schantell Remington Children eBooks Reviews

It's a fun read, and makes me excited to read book 2!
What a great debut novel! I love any fantasy or science fiction book to begin with, but the ideas and plot behind this story are quite intriguing. I have to admit, I bought this book months ago and didn't have the time then to get started on it. However, when I finally did pick it up, I found that I didn't want to put it down!
Descriptive writing allowed me to visualize the story and characters. I look forward to the sequel. What an enjoyable novel from a first-time author.
Captivating book that was a great read. You really learn to love all of the characters and feel what they are going through. Great story that wraps itself up nicely leaving you satisfied at the end but knowing there is potential for more. Denfitely a darker book but filled with lighthearted moments for needed comic relief. I would recommend it to anyone!
Intriguing and well written, the plot twists and turns made for a riveting read. The story hooks you from the beginning. Having reached the end, I was dismayed I have to wait for more! I look forward to the next book in this exciting saga.
Funny enough I heard about this book while waiting for a concert to start, the sweet lady behind me was telling the gentleman beside her who I assume to be her husband about how her friends daughter had just published her first book and her mom was proud of her. So naturally I had to ease drop and once I heard the title I had to turn around and ask for more info!! I'm so happy I did! I almost didn't want to finish the book only because I knew I would have to wait for the sequel!! Absolutely loved every minute of this book and I'll anxiously be waiting for the next one!!!
First let me start by saying that I have read a early version of this novel. I had stumbled across this book on . It wasn't the type of book that I would normally have picked up for myself but I thought it sounded interesting so gave it a try. I was surprised by the quality of it since it was a first time author and a self published book. I felt the need to review and recommend the book. Up till now that has been the only review that I have ever posted. It has great characters and a unique premise. I was excited and a little nervous to hear that the book was being republished and had been rewritten. After rereading it I have gained an all new level of respect for the author and her writing. I could see that the author isn't scared to rework her writing. She has taken an already good book and made it better. I was surprised to find that it was a faster paced read. Not that the first one was slow either. There were still surprises for me and I felt that after finishing it that it was a much stronger beginning to the series. I am really looking forward to the next book. One other reviewer made the point and I agree with them. Even though this is a first book in a series, it isn't a cliff hanger ending. Too many authors try to pull that trick, that it is nice to see the author miss this pitfall. There is so much potential for this series. I will be keeping a close eye on its progress in the future.
