Very interesting story, however, I've been trying to read it off and on for several years now. It keeps coming up in lists of other books I love, so I kept going back to it. The writing is very descriptive which may be part of why the story goes so slow, although I've read a lot of other descriptive books that don't feel this way. The story is really good once you get through it, but honestly I need to take another break before going on to book 2. For reference, I love authors like Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan, George RR Martin, JRR Tolkien, early books by Terry Goodkind (his later books and most recent books are unreadable), Pierce Brown, and Michael J. Sullivan to name a few. Tad Williams is a great writer and his story is awesome, you just have to trudge through so much slowness. It's kind of hard for me to describe the slowness, because nothing felt unnecessary really, just slow. Hopefully that helps. I would recommend the book, but be prepared for a great story that is somehow slow.

Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series is, as always, one of the great epic fantasy series that any fan of fantasy should read, and has been since the late 80's. Everyone should read this... but maybe get it in print.

Sadly, whatever method was used to translate this book (and the rest of the series) into electronic format resulted in a staggering number of typos. If you've read the book before, they can be glossed over. If you haven't, they will make this a somewhat difficult read. These range from changing the chapter title "A Thousand Nails" to "A Thousand Naifs," to utterly butchering the composition of the SIthi language. Issues with italicization also abound.

It's still a great story. One of the best, in fact. But if you're a stickler for correctness, don't encourage this kind of sloppiness by buying the eBook.
I did not know that the audible and text can not be used simultaneously. Bummer. Every other digital book I have will allow reading and listening at the same time. ***update called audible. After four different agents couldn't figure it out, the fifth helped solve the problem. Audible updated kindle text to version 6 while I waited. After switching off the scroll feature can now read and listen simultaneously. (find scrolling button upper right of kindle screen. included on the font settings page). My rating is about inadequate customer service, not Tad's book.
I read the series quite many years ago and I did rated at the time with 5 stars, today I would rate it with four. Why? Mainly because the main character characterisation. Is not very credible. Considering that teenagers can be troublesome or full of opposite feelings and stances or merely spoiled, some trait(s) should appear as foundation of future developments. This one is quite flat and it is very difficult to see why should be admired or liked at all. The four stars goes for a beautiful and skillful writing, good pace in the development of the plot, credible and likeable secondary characters.
The Dragonbone Chair is a fantasy epic quest in a medieval setting with swords,castles and a society closely resembling the England of several hundred years ago. The story starts with a young orphan boy,Simon,who is being raised by the castle housekeeping staff of the country's king. Simon is a dreamer and a bit of a klutz,but some reason the king's doctor/magician/wise man takes a liking to him and gradually Simon finds himself the doctor's apprentice. The king's death throws that comfortable life out the window as Simon is forced to choose sides. So begins an epic four volume,3000 page count,journey of growth and discovery. We're talking a slow,steady pace here so its best to relax and enjoy the trip. Along the way while he's growing up he will encounter a variety of magical beings,foriegn races, a beautiful princess(wouldn't you know it) and a host of strange lands. He gets into and out of scrapes as the odds keep getting higher. Dragonbone chair, book one, will introduce most of the characters and set the stage for what happens in the next three books. Seeking a magic sword with a strange and varied band of helpers finishes out the book.
Written more than 30 years ago this was Tad Williams second published novel and has aged gracefully. What his writing lacks in polish is more than made up for with a freshness that turns standard plot devices into a nice long comfortable read.
I checked this book out of the library about 8 years ago and when I saw it on , I had to buy it. This book is more of a marathon instead of a sprint. You really need to go the extra mile and stick with it as it starts out very slowly. But once it takes off, it takes off. It is exhilarating and scary and pushes you to the edge. All the characters are wonderfully written and Tad bounces around so you get the full story, but not so much it becomes confusing. We have all read those books where the author bounces around so much you have to start flipping back to previous chapters to remember what is going on and who is who. I highly recommend the books; just know, you really have to stick with it. Regretful, you will not feel.
This turned out to be a very good book, despite my, and many other fellow readers, lack of interest in the first 160 pages. World building? Seriously, pure tedium if you ask me. We did not need that much foundation laid basically, just for Simon's character. It could have very well been done in 40 or so pages.

Beyond that though, this book goes to eleven. Other great books go to ten, but if you just need that little extra, you can turn it to eleven when he read this book! (Thanks Nigel!) It's just an incredible story. So many have been denied the opportunity to experience this masterpiece because they could not make it past page 160.

Please, heed my advice and trudge on for you will not be disappointed. Bring on book two!
